CTA Board News

CTA of MI now has a full slate of officers with Marianne Bernard serving as President, Josh Guitar as Vice-president, Katie Doyle as Secretary, Janet Glisson continues as Treasurer and Jeannine Daly will serve as Immediate Past President.

The officers were introduced at the state conference held in Bloomfield Hills in mid-September. The board participated in a retreat at Mercy Court under the guidance of Sr. Patricia McDonald. Much of the day was given to reflection on the power of forgiveness and how it affects the choices we make and how we treat one another. Board members had time for personal reflection as well as discussion.

Kathy O'Bee from the Grand Rapids area joined the group and is currently working with a small group of volunteers to re-establish a CTA presence in their area. She is being assisted by Robert Funero who serves on the board of CTA National.

President’s Perspective

Today I am writing you as the incoming board president of CTA-MI. As of January 2013, Jeannie Daly will certainly be a tough act to follow. Jeannie is dedicated to the mission of CTA and the growth of this organization.

To this end she has selflessly given of herself for the last four years. Jeannie will now assume the position of Immediate Past President and will surely lend us her support.

As a way of introducing myself I would like to share the story of how I originally got involved with Call to Action. It 2006 and Pope Benedict XVI made a visit the USA. I felt I needed to make a statement about the lack of leadership roles for woman in the Catholic Church. My action was to write a letter to several local newsletters pointing out that the Pope should take note that there were several highly capable women in the US holding leadership roles in our government and he should consider how much women have to offer in our church.

About a week after my letter appeared in print I received a phone call from a neighbor that I didn't know. She introduced herself as, Mary Hennig, and she invited me to join Call to Action. Having never heard of this organization I was hesitant. Mary said that her CTA-MI held local meetings, demonstrated for Women's ordination and held statewide conferences. In fact she requested I come to one of her branch gatherings in Detroit. She was very persuasive. Over the past six years I have become very active in planning Liturgies, Mary Magdalene Celebrations and conferences. Most of all I enjoyed fellowship with like minded women and men who are living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My main concern for 2013 is to work on our avenues of communication used by CTA-MI. So far members have been very patient with my struggle to update our membership and mailing lists. I have been working hard to straighten things out and I think you will note a real improvement. For those of you who want to receive our newsletter and other important updates by email I am introducing a new email address, mailingsfromctami@gmail.com. Please add this address to your contact to avoid our communications falling into your spam folders. My email address will remain, bernfmly@aol.com, should you need to contact me personally. Those who would still prefer to receive your newsletter in the mail will still have that option.

Additionally I want to inform you of some recent new media we acquired to share with you. We have purchased permission to download all available sessions from CTA-USA's recent conference, Justice Rising, held in November 2012. If you contact me, or any of the branch representatives, we will provide you with the URL, username and password you will need to download this audio material at no cost to you.

Future ideas include more interaction through Facebook and more live streaming events with CTA-USA.

It is an honor and delight for me to be the board president of Call to Action of Michigan. Please feel free to share your concerns and ideas with me either by email or by phone, (248) 625-1723.
